The Workshop fee covers meals, space for camping, and all training and materials.

Topics covered in the class include:

  • Masonry and Rubble-Trench/Stone/urbanite foundations
  • Choosing the right materials
  • Mixing cob  - by foot and machinery
  • Building cob walls
  • Trimming cob walls
  • Building and installing windows and door frames
  • Earthen plasters and sometimes natural paints and earthen floors
  • Passive solar design
  • Roof framing
  • Simple round wood framing
  • Load bearing & Infill wall systems  - Strawbale, Straw Clay and Cob
  • Earthen plasters
  • Use of local materials: clays, rock, thatching reed, round pole timbers.
  • Earthen floors
  • Cob sculpting
  • Thatched roofing and Living Roof  (demo and hands-on)

Classroom Lectures:  As we will be building a complete cottage, we will get the opportunity to cover related topics that are vital to building your own home or outbuilding but not always covered in shorter workshops:

Hands-on experiences will be augmented by afternoon lectures under the shady tree, evening slide presentations, group Q&A and individual design consultations on your own plans, and an extensive Natural Building library/bookstore for your browsing pleasure.
